Green County Jail & Sheriff’s Office Starts

Sitework is underway on the $75M jail and sheriff’s office for Green County. Featuring 69 cells, the modern jail will house 94 inmates, with an eventual capacity of 124. The current jail has only 43 jail cells, allowing a maximum of 70 inmates. Designed by Klein McCarthy Architects, a key provision of the new jail will be to house multiple classifications of inmates, including disabled, mental health, medical, and gender-specific inmates. The new jail also includes a flexible jail pod to accommodate periods when the jail’s average daily population exceeds normal capacity.

Another unique design feature is the central command room, which provides clear sightlines into each jail pod. A new underground tunnel will connect to the current Justice Center, providing safe, secure transportation for court appearances. The sheriff’s office will include a public lobby, administration space, evidence processing, coroner, dispatch center, and a 20-stall parking garage. Community/training rooms can be divided into three separate rooms or one large room for planned events. After this project is completed, inmates will be moved into the jail, and the existing jail and sheriff’s office will be demolished.
